"Of Mice and Men" vocabulary exercise

  • With your partner, select two words that you feel are both new to you.
  • Submit the word within its context.
  • Submit your own definition of the word after looking it up.
  • Use the word in your own sentence and submit. 
Example:

"From outside came the clang of horseshoes on the playing peg and the shouts of men, playing, encouraging, jeering."


Jeering- to shout or mock in a demeaning manner


The crowd was very rude as they were yelling and jeering the talent show contestants off the stage.

Somber, depressing

The faces of the funeral goers looked on morosely at the beginning of the eulogies.



Plaintively (Page 29)

Plaintively: adj.
Sorrowful, regretful

She glanced plaintively at the pictures of an old love, whom she had let go in a flurry of misunderstanding.

Craftily: Skilled in or marked by underhandedness, deviousness, or deception.
Mr.Zavala craftily found a solution to the problem.

(page 8) "But Lennie made an elaborate pantomime of innocence."
Pantomime: The art or technique of conveying emotions, actions, feelings, by gestures without speech.
His death came slow and pantomime that could hear his sorrowful cry.

-Reprehensible = pg.59 "When Candy spoke they both jumped as though they had been caught doing something reprehensible", DEFINITION: Easily blamed for things, SENTENCE: When the police found a dead body Abraham was the first one to be looked at because of his reprehensible actions from before.

-Dejectedly = pg.9 "Lennie sat down on the ground and hung his head dejectedly", DEFINITION: sad, low spirited, let down, negative, SENTENCE: He walked away dejectedly after being rejected by his crush.

Liniment (noun): balm or cream medicine

I used aloe as my liniment for my scorpion sting.

Page 27
"He had drawn a derogatory statement form George."

Derogatory (adj.): An offensive attitude/front

Jack made a derogatory statement to the giant which made him really mad.

Bindle (page 3)

"George unslung his BINDLE and dropped it gently on the bank"

Bindle (Noun) A Sack that hobos use to carry their belongings and beddings

A hobo picked up all his belongings and put it in his BINDLE.


Rummy (page72)

"S'pose you couldn't go into the bunk house and play RUMMY ' cause you was black"

Rummy(Noun) a card game that the objective is to match cards or sequences

Jack and Bob played RUMMY in the barn to get away from chores.

1. Derision
"Through the open door came the thuds and occasional clangs of a horse shoe game, and now and then the sound of voices raised in approval or derision." page 38

derision- an action or speech meant to be funny.

Andrew's fart was the derision Christine needed in order to feel better.

2. Rheumatism
"He's all stiff with rheumatism." page 44

rheumatism- a disorder that affects joints or connected tissue.

Mr. Johnson's rheumatism had gotten so bad, that it had led to arthritis.

Crestfallen- expressing discouragement or disappointment.
"Candy was crestfallen. 'Didn't tell nobody but Crooks.'" -Page 83
ie: Abby was crestfallen when she found out her favorite team had lost the game.

Contemptuously- expressing or showing hate or disdain
"Awright," she said contemptuously. "Awright, cover 'im up if ya wanta..."- Page 79
ie: As Trinity glared at him, she spat contemptuously.

“But Lennie made an elaborate pantomime of innocence” (Pg.8) any various dancing or dramatic performances in which a story is told by expressions and movements of the person performing. After the lost of a relationship, he pantomime showing how she felt to her friends.

“All the guys got a horseshoe tenement going on.” (Pg.86) Government property or its private property by a single person. The boys got caught and were brought into jury for breaking and entering into the gated tenement.

Word 1: "Pugnacious":
Content: "His glands was at once calculating and pugnacious." (p.25)
Our Definition: Argumentative, quick to find themselves in an argument.
Sentence: It would not be uncommon to find that a lawyer is pugnacious.

Word 2: "Junctures":
Content: "On one side of the river the golden foothill slopes curve up to the strong and rocky Gabilan mountains, but on the valley side the water is lined with trees-willows fresh and green with every spring, carrying in their lower leaf junctures the debris of the winter's flooding; and sycamores with mottled, white, recumbent limbs and branches that arch over the pool." (p.1)
Our Definition: A specific point in time, a location in which things join.
Sentence: It was at that juncture that forced them to go their separate ways.
