In-depth character response

With your research partner, continue from the discussion(s) we held in class about our readings so far. Be sure that both partners contribute to your post and that it is beyond the general agreements we have made about our research and characters early on and also in the discussions we have held throughout the reading of the "Of Mice and Men."

  1. Between George, Lennie and Curley, choose one character. Do a in-depth character analysis, this may be a continuation from the chosen character during our in-class discussion. Remember, I DO NOT want "he is smart. Curley is short." Explain how his physical appearance affects his character, or how Lennie's lack of intelligence affects others. (At least two paragraphs with in-text examples).
  • Although George seems to have a lot of resentment toward Lennie for their past mishaps, you can tell that it is in George's caring nature that he wants to continue their friendship. George always seems to back-up Lennie's lack of intelligence as he claims, "He ain't no cuckoo. He's dumb as hell, but he ain't crazy, An' I ain't so bright neither," (Steinback 39). As George protects his friend in confrontations and also in questionable moments as he states that Lennie has, "no more harm in him than a kid," it proves that George has a very kind and humble heart, always respecting Lennie for who he really is inside (Steinback 43).

Lennie-Lennie is a Kind Hearted person, although, he is not smart due to his mental disability. He is a sensitive person who is fragile and easily scared. He is a clueless and innocent person who is not very independent and loves animals. Due to his size, he is not very good with animals as he unfortunately kills the pets he was given. Also he is slow-minded but does what he is told.

Lennie's Disabilities get in the way of his memory, he may not be smart but he is a hard worker as George states "he ain't bright, hell of a good worker though, hell of a nice fella, but he ain't bright. i've knew him for a long time." (John Stienback pg.34)

Curley is small man with the complex of Napoleon. He's overly aggressive to compensate for his height. "Curley's like a lot of little guys. He hates big guys". (Steinbeck, page 26) He dislikes the looming, broad shouldered men because they're the physical manifestation of what he wants to be. Lennie is not only a large man but he's simple minded and makes him an easy target for Curley. At the first meeting between Curley and Lennie, the sight of the large oaf was enough to fuel an intimidated hatred of him. "He glanced coldly at George and then at Lennie. His arms gradually bent at the elbows and his hands closed into fists." Whether his physical actions were conscious or not, it's apparent that his loathing for larger men is imbedded in his actions.

As he's the son of the ranch owner this gives him a sense of self-entitlement, making him feel like God amongst the mere men. He abuses the power that he has and isn't shy to threaten those who can usurp his power. He's constantly insecure about the whereabouts of his 'lovely' wife and is under the assumption that any of the farm hands are having relations with her. "Curley burst into the room excitedly. "Any you guys seen my wife?" he demanded." (Steinbeck, page 53) Though Slim isn't a large man in the sense of girth, he is cool and collected, which garners the admiration of the others. However, it also incites the jealousy and fury of Curley. "Curley looked threateningly about the room. "Where the hell's Slim?"" (Steinbeck, page 53) Ultimately, Curley is an insecure little man.

Lennie may come out as a clumsy, uneducated, child- like adult, but that isn't who he really is on the inside. What people think is a rough and dangerous man turns out to really be a warm hearted, timid guy. it it claims that Lennie comes off as a "huge man, shapeless of face with large pale eyes with wide slopping shoulders" (Steinback 2) but this is just his physical features.

Many people would assume Lennie is cold hearted and mean because of his body structure, but thats only what meets the eye. as you get to know Lennie you realize that inside that "he ain't mean" (Steinback 41). but this is who he really is on the inside

George:

George is stressed out because Lennie has a mental disorder which causes him to act "stupidly" and get them into trouble. But when George gets too angry, he realizes the consequences of his words and how it makes Lennie feel. This causes him to feel bad and it goes to show that George really does care, about Lennie. George also feels guilty because he once made fun of Lennie. It had gotten so serious that Lennie almost died. Since that incident, George had decided to look after Lennie, and make sure no one hurts him, no matter how aggravating and frustrating it may be.
We also found that George needs to be motivated in order to accomplish tasks. He can use the negative remarks directed towards Lennie, to defend him and continue to work hard and prove that Lennie is worth more than just his mental disorder. His most difficult task that he has yet to accomplish is dealing with the result of Lennie's actions because of his disability. We notice that George often imagens what his life could've been if he decided to abandon Lennie. To get through this problem, George encisions the future ranch that he and Lennie would own and run. George uses a possibly flowed future in order to make it through his every day problems with Lennie.

Lennie comes off as a mentally challenged character but he is actually a nice man. he is a man that will listen to what ever someone asks him to do. He will do what George tells him to do like at the job interview" I ain't gonna say nothin'. just gonna stan' there." GEorge told him to say to himself so he remembers. So he wants to make people proud of him. He is really nice he doesn't cause harm. He doesn't want to hurt anyone. when slim told him to stop petting the pup he listened because he didn't want to hurt the dog. so he is nice person

George is a small man who is the best friend Lennie. He always on a move to get a job with Lennie, but he thinks he is being slowed down by him. He tries to take leadership and becomes the boss of what to do. George has a demanding voice, "Give it hear!" instead of saying nicely to his friend.

George isnt only a leader that demands for ever thing that he believe that is the best for lennie which means he's more of a care giver than a leader because he still try's to protect him in any way. when he said "get'im lennie" he made a decision to tell lennie to retaliate against curly when there in a fight.

Curley:

Curley is an insecure human being who takes advantage of his father’s title as boss. “Won’t ever get canned ‘cause his old man’s the boss.” (Steinbeck, 27) He thinks that just because his dad is the big man of the farm, the man who gives and takes jobs from the workers, that he can look down at everyone else in that same way. The moment that Curley walked into George and Lennie’s room, just seeing Lennie sparked up his insecurities and made Curley talk down on him. For example, his hands formed into fists as he caught the sight of Lennie. “He glanced coldly at George then at Lennie. His arms gradually bent at the elbows and his hands closed into fists.” (Steinbeck, 25)

Curley-
Curley is "top notch". He always wants to fight with bigger men. Making him come off as a boss. Swamper says " He's alla time picking scraps with big guys." As you can see Curley tries to pick on bigger guys to show them not to mess with him (Steinbeck 26). When Curley and Lennie first met Lennie intimidated him with his largeness. "He glanced coldly at George and then at Lennie. His arms gradually bent at the elbows and his hands closed into fists." (Steinbeck 25) As you can see again Curley wants to pick fights and quickly intimidated by largeness

Curley is also an advantage taker. He takes advantage of his dad because he is the boss of this new ranch. . “Won’t ever get canned ‘cause his old man’s the boss.” (Steinbeck, 27) This means that he won't ever get fired because dads the boss. Curley thinks he can act like a jerk and scrap everybody because of this leisure.
